Improving Suction Cup Performance — Gap Tap Troubleshooting

Improving Suction Cup Performance

Every floor is different. If your Gap Tap suction cup isn't gripping as firmly as expected, try these fixes in order.

Common Fixes

1. Clean and dry the surface

Dirt, dust, or moisture are the most common causes of weak suction. Wipe the area thoroughly with a microfiber cloth and let it dry completely before applying Gap Tap.

2. Apply firm, even pressure

Press down on the Gap Tap firmly to eliminate air pockets before locking the suction cup. A quick press-and-lock won't create a full seal — take an extra second to push out all the air.

3. Use the silicone grip pad (textured floors)

For grooved or textured floors with a glossy finish, place the included silicone pad glossy side face-down on the plank. Smooth out any air bubbles before applying the Gap Tap on top.

4. Apply silicone grease (matte/porous floors)

For matte or porous grooved floors, apply a thin layer of the included silicone grease around the edge of the suction cup. This fills micro-gaps and creates a much tighter seal.

5. Warm the suction cup

Cold rubber is less flexible and seals poorly. If your Gap Tap was stored in a cold garage or car, bring it indoors and let it warm to room temperature (about 30 minutes) before use.

Still Not Working?

  1. Verify your floor type in our Floor Compatibility Guide.
  2. Make sure your floor is a floating installation (not nailed or glued down).
  3. Inspect the suction cup for cracks, tears, or debris stuck to the rim.
  4. Try a different spot on the same plank — some areas may have better surface contact.
  5. Email support@gap-tap.com with your floor type and a photo — we'll help.

Pro Tip: Temperature matters! Both the tool and the floor should be at room temperature for best results. Cold suction cups are less flexible and may not seal properly.
